Irish laborers built canals (left) and railroads. Other immigrants, especially the Italians, built port facilities and
other key parts of America's infrastructure. Americans with roots in Italy (right) and elsewhere in Europe
remember their ancestral traditions, but count themselves as Americans. Italian explorers Columbus, Cabot,
America and built up America instead of trying to undermine America.
The German couple who farmed in Michigan, the Russians and other Slavs who worked in America's factories
(and whose pretty descendant celebrates their heritage), and the the Hispanics of California have all helped
make America the great nation that it is. They and the other immigrants through the Ellis Island Era joined
