THE ELLIS ISLAND TEST
of the basic freedom of this nation.
About 20 million people came to America during the Ellis Island Era. Annie Moore (left), a 15-year-old Irish girl
York City until her death. Many of the children of Ellis Island immigrants donated items to the Ellis Island
who brought her two younger brothers, was the first person processed at Ellis Island in 1892. She lived in New
Immigration Museum (center). The thigh boots belonged to a very slender Czech girl. The ancestors of Amelia
Earhart, like millions of others, came here to better themselves. Amelia was able to follow her dreams because
THE ELLIS ISLAND TEST WAS SIMPLE.
Come here legally. Don't be an illegal immigrant.
Earn your keep. Do not be likely to become a public charge.
Do not carry loathsome diseases (certain serious diseases).
Do not come as a contract worker to undercut Americans' wages.
Have a clean criminal record. (Political arrests didn't count.)
Don't be a moral degenerate, or guilty of an act of moral turpitude.
Be willing to assimilate. Don't be someone who hates our way of life.
No Nazis, Communists, anarchists, separatists, parasites, or jihadists.
Ronald Reagan drove the defeat of Soviet Communism with little loss of life. He also drove the restoration of
out the Ellis Island Test, looked the other way on illegal immigration, let in jihadist immigrants inimical to the
Ellis Island; he spoke there in 1987. The Twin Towers are no longer there because government officials threw
American way of life, and failed to check them properly.
