The American people provided food, shelter, health care, elementary school classes, language
classes, simple charity, religious aid, and holiday gifts to those who were detained at Ellis Island
while family members recovered, or while they awaited rulings on their eligibility to enter
America. The American people even provided these services to those who had to be deported.
